Our Purpose

We are not Brokers, rather, we are a unique technical service provider allowing Oil & Gas producers and EPC’s to get the most of their inventory capital investments. Black Iron is the perfect compliment to EPC organizations assisting procurement teams to deliver superior results.

Black Iron is different. We approach each engineered product and application subjectively. We have the tools, resources and industry knowledge to properly asses market value. Black Iron uses industry and engineering subject matter experts to understand the product and gain access to the right buyer/seller pools. We use proven engineering principles to validate the product for its possible application.

Our process adds value to prospective buyers and sellers alike, helping them quickly source or understand available inventories, determine market value and ensure the product they are considering is going to be a fit for application. Whether buying or selling, Black Iron’s technical team will develop qualified opportunities and leverage access to local and international markets.

Our Story

Black Iron Energy was formed in October of 2018 as an independent service provider for rotating equipment power generation and process solutions for Oil and Gas markets.
Our diverse team brings decades of experience and a passion for oil and gas. Our promise is a “can do” attitude. We pride ourselves at bringing complex, outside the box solutions to any situation.
Priority for customer service and prompt responsiveness is what you can expect working with Black Iron.
Our experts will find a unique and economical solution to your power, compression, or pump requirements. We have extensive inventories! Using global turbomachinery resources, we deliver quality rotating equipment. Our inventory of new, refurbished, or surplus equipment and generators can help lower capital costs, reduce schedule, and improve overall project economics. We provide warrantied solutions to a production need.
Black Iron uses a collaborative approach; working with your technical team to build the best approach and equipment solution for the application.

When you work with Black Iron, engineering is part of the purchase! Engineering services including controls, process, mechanical, electrical, integration & operations are part of our turn-key service.

Scott, a seasoned Journeyman Millwright, boasts an impressive 20-year tenure marked by his extensive expertise in rotating and process equipment across various major players in the oil and gas sector.

Throughout his career, Scott has made significant contributions to facility construction, consulting endeavors, and held pivotal roles overseeing major oil and gas projects. Notably, he steered the prosperous growth of a parts and service business, achieving an annual doubling of revenue under his astute leadership. It was during this period that Scott’s keen eye uncovered opportunities in the surplus equipment market, inspiring him to co-found Black Iron Energy. With his profound industry knowledge and entrepreneurial drive, Scott has played a pivotal role in elevating equipment and service delivery standards within our esteemed industry.

Steve is an accomplished Engineering Technologist & Project Management expert with a background in rotating equipment packaging, retrofit solutions, and field services.

He held roles at Enerflex, Brahma, NGC, and Bidell, amassing expertise in applications engineering, project design, & project management, spanning manufacturing and field operations. One of his achievements includes pioneering the development of a retrofit & field construction program (2014), which flourished into a 20-million-dollar annual revenue enterprise.

While overseeing retrofit & field activities, Steve discerned an opportunity for an innovative equipment and service provider. Driven by his sharp business acumen and vision for a customer-centric, comprehensive equipment and services provider, he embarked on the journey to co-found his own company, Black Iron Energy.

Kimberley Zerr serves as our Director of Human Resources and Accounting, leveraging her extensive 15-year background in business management encompassing various facets of HR functions.

Kimberley’s diverse business expertise enables her to adeptly handle multiple responsibilities within the company. This includes overseeing benefit management, payroll administration, recruitment and retention efforts, health and safety protocols, employee relations, contract management, accounting tasks, and training and development initiatives.

She collaborates closely with senior management to craft and execute HR strategies and initiatives that harmonize with the overarching business strategy.

Justin embarked on his career in construction from a young age and transitioned to the Oil & Gas sector in 2018. With a versatile background encompassing project management, business administration, and sales, Justin brings a wealth of experience to our team.

Justin’s exceptional work ethic, entrepreneurial spirit, and adept problem-solving abilities equip him to confront challenges with unwavering positivity and determination. He assumes a pivotal role in the day-to-day operations of Black Iron Energy, playing a central part in ensuring customer satisfaction and loyalty.

In close collaboration with the leadership team, Justin diligently steers the company towards growth and prosperity, and we are delighted to have him as an integral part of our organization.

Kyle MacPherson joined Black Iron Energy in 2023, having worked in the natural gas compression industry since 2013.

Prior to joining Black Iron Energy, Kyle held positions at the top compression packaging companies as a Project designer and Retrofit Project Manager. With over a decade of experience in engineering design, applications, and sales support, project management and field construction he is situated to implement and maintain processes and controls for all facets of the project lifecycle.

Kyle holds an Engineering, Drafting and Design Diploma from SAIT and is a Certified Engineering Technologist with ASET.

Darren McRae has the role of Business Development Manager.  He started in oil and gas in 1994 as technical sales for a global leader in the manufacture & supply of flow measurement equipment.  In 2004, Darren transitioned into gas compression & processing, where he held business development roles with various packagers.  In recent years, his focus has been in surplus equipment supply. 

Throughout his career, Darren has maintained a commitment to exceeding his customer’s expectations.  He is a highly determined and self-motivated professional who understands the crucial role of strategic planning and project management in successfully implementing corporate initiatives while maintaining the highest standards of customer service.

Darren holds a Mechanical Engineering Technologist diploma from SAIT.

Carl holds the distinguished titles of Registered Canadian Safety Professional (CRSP) and Manufacturing Safety Officer (MSO), reflecting his commitment to excellence in safety practices.

With a remarkable career spanning over 35 years, Carl has amassed extensive experience in safety management across diverse industries, including Manufacturing, Heavy Industry, Steel Plants, Foundries, and Oil and Gas.

Carl’s specialization lies in conducting comprehensive hazard assessments, implementing rigorous risk management strategies, overseeing Workers’ Compensation matters, and administering Alcohol and Drug programs. He operates at the forefront of our safety efforts, orchestrating safety projects with valuable input from field personnel and senior management.
