Sometimes, the right person joins a team at exactly the right time.
For Black Iron Energy, Kyle MacPherson is one of those people.
As Black Iron has continued to grow, expanding its in-house capabilities, opening a new fabrication shop and taking on increasingly complex retrofit and packaging projects, Kyle’s experience, technical mindset and calm approach have become an important part of how the team moves work forward.
As Senior Project Manager and Certified Engineering Technologist (CET), Kyle brings a rare combination of field experience, design knowledge, project management expertise and practical problem-solving. When you are retrofitting multi-million-dollar compression equipment, decommissioning complex oilfield assets or packaging technical solutions that demand precision at every stage, you need someone who does more than manage a schedule. You need someone who understands the work from every angle.
Kyle does.
He plays a key role in project management, design, engineering, applications and sales support, procurement, and field and shop execution. His background spans hands-on field work, drafting and design, gas compression packaging, retrofit project management and technical support, giving him a well-rounded view of how complex oil and gas equipment projects come together from start to finish.
We asked Kyle to share more about his career path, what shaped his approach to project work and what he believes sets Black Iron Energy apart.
From Pools to Compression Fabrication & Retrofitting
“Everything from building custom formwork, plumbing & electrical and mechanical room setup was done alongside the concrete/plaster finishing and tilework.”
Kyle MacPherson, Senior Project Manager
The work was creative, technical and highly practical, but Kyle knew he wanted to move into something more technical. That led him to SAIT, where he enrolled in the Engineering Drafting and Design Technology (EDDT) program in 2011.
Kyle entered his final semester with a focus on process piping, which led him into the oil and gas industry. He began his career at AMEC as a designer while the company was supporting CNRL’s Horizon North oilsands facility. From there, he moved to a Calgary-based gas compression fabricator, where he spent the next 10 years.
Seeing the Whole System
One of the key skills Kyle brings to Black Iron Energy is the ability to look beyond one piece of the job. His experience gives him a full-picture understanding of what it takes to execute complex work well.
For Kyle, strong project execution is about more than managing a schedule. It is about understanding how decisions made early in a project affect every stage that follows.
"Having experienced all facets of a project lifecycle – from design, engineering, procurement, and fabrication – I learned to hold the whole project, rather than just my piece in it.”
Kyle
“I take pride in being a calm presence when tough situations arise and have developed a solid problem-solving strategy to ensure projects are finished accurately and meet our customer expectations.”

A Designer’s Perspective in a Project Manager’s Role
Kyle believes his early experience as a designer gives him a unique perspective as a Senior Project Manager. At Black Iron Energy, the work often extends beyond traditional retrofit projects, with scopes that can include decommissioning, asset sales, equipment refurbishment, packaging and redeployment.
That requires an understanding of how oil and gas equipment operates within the broader industry. His process design education continues to support the way he approaches technical challenges today.
“I believe that starting my career in oil and gas as a designer has provided a unique perspective as a Senior Project Manager. My education in process design has afforded me a knowledge of how all types of oil and gas equipment operate in the larger flow of our industry.”

Growing with Black Iron Energy
Kyle’s connection to Black Iron runs deeper than a job posting. He’d worked directly with our Co-founder and COO Steve Zerr earlier in his career. When Steve approached him about joining as Senior Project Manager, Kyle saw an opportunity to bring his expertise to a rapidly scaling organization.
Since joining, he’s been instrumental in expanding our capabilities – from opening our new fabrication shop in Rockyview County to managing the technical execution of major retrofit projects that showcase what’s possible when expertise meets infrastructure.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of bringing the shop alive with the current major retrofit underway. The large horsepower compression we are packaging through the shop right now is a technical feat we are all proud to be a part of.”
Kyle
The Black Iron Advantage
"The core of our value is that we own the full lifecycle of an asset rather than just one slice of it. They aren't stitching together three or four vendors and absorbing the coordination risk themselves; we hold that. On the technical execution side, the value is that we can actually do the work in-house, not just manage it."

What Makes a Good Project?
“Everyone would love to say a 'Good Project' is the one that goes off without a hitch; this is not always the case. A good project to me is one where the initial planning phase and up-front effort feed into a productive workflow and solid execution. Without the attention to detail and foresight into potential bottlenecks, project execution is a tedious scramble to see through.”
Kyle
“There are so many revelations throughout a project, both positive and negative, that guide our future work, leading to a wider understanding of how to improve our execution on the next big project.”

A Career Milestone That Helped Shape What Came Next
"The first major compressor we retrofitted two years ago was a highlight. We proved that a small company, with our depth of knowledge, can be capable of executing complex projects with a technical scope. It laid the groundwork to take the plunge into acquiring a shop and expanding our capabilities."
Kyle
Beyond the Shop
Outside of work, Kyle stays busy with his wife and three young children. Depending on the season, his family spends time snowboarding in the winter and taking part in summer sports throughout the rest of the year.
Kyle is also involved in Calgary’s music community as the Band Director of a youth bagpipe band that has been around since the 1970s.
“I have been teaching there for 15 years and spend a portion of my summer going to regional Highland Games where the band competes.”

Advice for the Next Generation
"Always search for a deeper understanding of the interconnected roles and responsibilities related to your position. If you would like to grow as an individual within any company, it is important to learn how your unique skill feeds into the global picture of any organization. A small piece of knowledge or advice from a shop assembly worker, or field technician can be just as valuable as a directive from a lead engineer, or company management. By maintaining strong relationships with workers from all facets in the industry, you will slowly build up a strong overall framework for success. Never stop the desire to learn more!"

We’re proud to have him on the team.
