Connecting buyers and sellers is one thing.
Creating the right match — technically, commercially and operationally — is where real value happens.
That is what made Black Iron Energy’s work with Heartland Oil Corporation more than a straightforward equipment transaction.
When changing production conditions created an opportunity to right-size one of Heartland’s compressor packages, Black Iron didn’t just identify a replacement unit. The team validated the technical fit, connected Heartland with another customer’s available equipment, supported financing, managed key logistics, and redeployed Heartland’s existing package to a customer who could put it back to work.
The result was a solution that created value in multiple directions: better-fit equipment for Heartland, capital recovered from surplus inventory for another customer, and a repurposed compressor package placed into a stronger application.
The Opportunity at Heartland
During a field visit to scope potential decommissioning work and assess the value of unused equipment, Black Iron Energy’s field personnel identified a major opportunity at one of Heartland’s sites: a 1480 hp Waukesha L7042GSI JGK/4 three-stage compressor package that was far bigger than the site required.
Due to current production levels, Heartland was only utilizing about one-third of the available horsepower.
The opportunity was clear: Heartland no longer needed that level of horsepower on site. By right-sizing the package, there was potential to:
- Reduce strain on the engine
- Lower maintenance demands
- Use less fuel gas
- Reduce emissions
- Maximize current production conditions
How could Black Iron help Heartland optimize the site without creating a commercial challenge?
Once the process conditions were confirmed, Black Iron ran compressor performance and determined that the ideal replacement would be a 530 hp 4-stage package.
The additional stage of compression would allow Heartland to increase production by operating at a lower suction pressure than the existing three-stage unit.
Relationships that Move Equipment
With the technical requirements defined, Black Iron’s network helped bring the solution into focus.
Because the team works closely with operators across the industry, Black Iron often has visibility into available equipment before it reaches the broader market. In this case, another customer had recently advised the team that they had a 530 hp Waukesha H24GL Ariel JGJ/4 4-stage unit available for sale.
Black Iron reviewed the available unit, ran compressor performance and confirmed it would be a strong technical fit for Heartland’s needs.
“This project is a great example of how Black Iron supports customers beyond a simple equipment transaction. We identified the problem, found the right-sized solution, helped make it financially workable, and ensured both assets were repurposed where they could create the most value.”

Two Packages, Multiple Wins
Black Iron also helped make the project feasible and manageable for Heartland by supporting the technical, commercial, and logistical details required to move the equipment from opportunity to implementation.
This includes:
- Negotiating the purchase of the 4-stage unit.
- Providing financing to make the project feasible for Heartland.
- Providing drawings to modify an existing pile layout for the installation of the 4-stage unit.
- Taking care of getting vessels re-registered with Saskatchewan CRNs.
- Arranging load out and transportation of the replacement 4-stage unit.
- Purchase and disconnection of the existing 1480 hp 3-stage package.
“Black Iron understood what we were trying to achieve operationally and helped us get there with a solution that made sense technically and commercially.”

Where the Model Comes Together
In today’s market, operators are constantly balancing cost, performance, emissions, and production optimization.
At the same time, there is enormous, untapped value sitting in oversized, underused, or surplus equipment throughout the industry.
Black Iron helps connect those dots by combining field discovery, technical analysis, equipment sourcing, financing, logistics, asset redeployment, and site decommissioning.
Because the right match is only the beginning.
In this case, the result was simple: the right equipment, in the right place, backed by the right support.
That is the power of Black Iron’s full-circle approach.
